THE MASTER SUITE IS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROOMS IN THE HOUSE, WHERE A RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP CAN WORK WONDERS FOR YOUR MOOD AND PRODUCTIVITY. HERE WE SHARE HOW TO DESIGN A SUITE THAT SETS YOU UP FOR A POSITIVE START TO THE DAY.
When designing a bedroom, the bed should always be the focal point. From its aesthetic to its comfort, getting this right is crucial for the overall success of the room. However, the addition of a well-designed bedside table is equally important. It’s not only functional for holding essentials but also creates a sense of cohesiveness and symmetry to an otherwise ‘unfinished’ design.

Our thoughtful designs are focused on complementing the bed, subtly enhancing the space rather than distracting from it. For example, our wraparound headboard at our Broadway apartment, cocooning a bespoke walnut finish bedside, echoes the curves of the bed and the organic shapes of the rug. Similarly, the bedsides at our House of Walpole apartment adds depth and light to the stunning feature wall, as well as complementing the tone of the Savior bed.
BESPOKE DESIGN
Working with the very best of British artisans, we have been designing besides and beds for the world’s finest interiors for many years. Through our experience, we have mastered how to design bedsides that pull together the space – by either echoing the shapes of other pieces of furniture, masterfully balancing colour or adding depth and texture through the use of materials. Timeless, elegant designs can opt for traditional material such as walnut or exquisite bespoke marquetry, while more contemporary interiors can feature statement bronze or custom reeded bedsides - each brings with it another layer of thoughtful design.

ADDING ATMOSPHERIC LIGHTING
Tall, elegant lamps in pairs are a great way to add understated luxury to a suite, once again creating symmetry - one of the guiding principles of design, which can have a calm and positive impact as you enter a space.
Another important consideration is lighting and how you’ll be using your bedside table. If you’re an avid reader, it’s essential to ensure you have proper reading light—whether from a lamp or wall-mounted lighting.

MINIMAL STYLING
At Oliver Burns Studio, we prefer to keep bedside styling minimal, leaving enough room for a good book and space to add a simple floral arrangement, your watch and jewellery, and a treasured photo of loved ones of course! It’s important to note that the height of decorative items on the bedside should also be kept toa minimum. Taller vases or sculptures not only have the potential to fall over but also distract from the overall design.

USING ACCENTS OF COLOUR
Colour is often introduced through a bedside lamp, adding just the right touch to elevate your bedroom. This is an opportunity to tie in accents from rugs, artwork, and cushions, ensuring a balanced distribution of colour throughout the space. As seen in the Guest Suite of our House of Walpole apartment, the pop of burnt orange lifts an otherwise neutral palette, pulling together exquisite artwork and a bespoke rust-coloured footstool.

MIXING MATERIALS AND TEXTURES
We often draw design inspiration from nature and work with a variety of materials and textures when selecting bedside tables. Combining wood with metal, marble, or glass can add a layered look that feels thoughtfully curated. For example, combining a bronze frame with a travertine counter top can help draw more interest into the space.

SCULPTURAL SHAPES
Soften and break uplines by introducing rounded edges and organically sculpted shapes. This can help promote a feeling of flow and harmony, making the room feel more inviting. This is particularly effective if your bed has sharp lines or if the room has harsh architectural features.

For many, the rise in prominence of English wines is a relatively recent thing as big international names look to invest in the UK market. It is fair to say that many of the UK’s most well-known producers have been at it for decades and it is not before time that those leading the charge are being recognised globally for the really excellent wines that they are producing. As we move towards the better weather, it felt like the perfect time to sit down with Gusbourne’s CEO, Jonathan White, to hear more about the exciting world of English wines.
