  • ature has so much to offer in winter. From gathering armfuls of holly and ivy for decorating tables and mantelpieces to harvesting fresh berries and ferns to create the all-important door wreath; it’s wonderful to make use of this and bring a piece of the outside in during the festive season.

Dressing your front door with a beautiful statement wreath is the perfect winter welcome for guests. A wreath is a wonderful place to start when you are thinking of adding foliage to your décor. Through incorporating pine cones, glistening baubles and shimmering ribbon, you can bring some festive colour to your front door. There are also many florists who will make a bespoke fresh wreath from seasonal berries and foliage so you can choose a colour scheme that suits your own décor. Alternatively, keep things simple and fresh and opt for all green such as a cushion moss wreath. Combined with some ribbon and fairy lights, you can create a pretty alternative to the classic wreath.

Wreaths don’t have to be limited to the outside of your home. Their versatility means they can be used to great effect inside too, acting as stylish window decorations or beautiful additions to the back of your dining chairs on Christmas day.

Nothing beats the scent of pine wood and fresh foliage at Christmas time. Besides the Christmas tree, integrating greenery throughout your home will add a sophisticated festive feel that won’t detract from your interior décor.

Drape windowsills and doorways with plenty of green foliage, or add a stairway garland to create an instant impact when guests enter your home. Choosing a mixture of leaves with a variety of textures and tones will add depth which can be enhanced with some shimmering baubles or ribbon for added interest. Incorporating fragrant spices such as cinnamon sticks and cloves or even dried oranges will also add to the festive ambience.

Natural decorations on your dining table are perfect at this time of year. There is abundant garden foliage and winter materials that can be combined to create a lavish centrepiece; from whole branches for a sense of occasion, to scatterings of loose pinecones, entwined in ivy for a more relaxed style. Don’t forget individual place settings for the final finishing touch.

The fireplace often becomes the main focal point of a room during the festive season, and a garland over the mantelpiece is ideal for highlighting this. For a traditional fireplace, a large bushy display of ferns, holly and berries will add to its grandeur, or for a more understated appeal ivy or individual springs of pine present a natural look. Additional elements such as lights, together with some baubles to twinkle in the light of the fire below will complete the festive scheme.
